History

Founded in 1926, the Marin Rod and Gun Club is one of California’s premier outdoor sporting clubs.  The club was formed for the purposes of conservation, preservation and propagation of fish and game in Marin County, the State of California and the United States.   We have grown from our original membership of 35 to over 1200 active members.  We are a volunteer powered organization focused on keeping our costs and dues low to ensure club membership is accessible.

The Club Facilities

Over the years we have acquired over 55 acres of uplands and tide-lands on San Pablo Bay at Point San Quentin.    Our location on the Marin County side of the Richmond San Rafael Bridge offers easy access for our membership.

The sportsman clubhouse and bar of the Club was built in 1956.  This is where our monthly meetings are held along with club functions including membership meetings, holiday and social events.  We also host a variety of community building focused events including our Summer Barbeque, Kids and Ladies Day on the Pier.

A backbone of the club is our fishing pier stretching nearly ½ mile into San Pablo Bay and open everyday of the year from sunrise to sunset.   It is for the exclusive use of our members, their families and guests.  Striped bass, perch, sturgeon, and halibut are just some of the fare that can be caught from the pier.  We also have a boat ramp and parking operated by and for the exclusive use of our members.

Several acres of picnic and barbeque grounds are adjacent to the clubhouse.

Legislation

One of the highlights of our organization has been the role we have taken in working for the laws that are beneficial to the outdoor sportsman, to protect and conserve our fish and game.  Our legislators have given us their full support on fish and game matters.  We regularly attend hearings in Sacramento in order to protect the interests of our members.   We were instrumental in the legislative efforts to prohibit the commercial fishing for striped bass in California waters.

Conservation

The club has always been a leader in the conservation of fish and game.  The club continues to be instrumental in stopping pollution of our bays and streams.  While the club was in its infancy we published several full page advertisements to promote the construction of sewage treatment facilities in San Rafael.  These efforts continue today with our habitat restoration efforts to bring native oyster populations back to the bay.

Scholarship and Philanthropy

Each year the Marin Rod and Gun Club awards graduate scholarships in the fields of conservation, wildlife management and associated fields.  The club also supports worthwhile organizations including:  Trout and Salmon Unlimited, California Waterfowl Association, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts of America, Salmon Protection and Watershed Network.
